Having dandruff is like having a bad hair day. Walking around with flakes drifting down to your shoulders is a drag – and embarrassing when you’re trying to make a good impression. While it may not be a disaster in the big scheme of things, dandruff can rank right up there with a bad haircut. The difference is that while a bad haircut will grow out on its own, dandruff is liable to stick around unless you treat the problem. Get to the root of the problem Dandruff is caused by a fungus called pityrosporum ovale (P. ovale) that occurs naturally on everyone’s scalp. When flakes appear, an overgrowth of p.ovale has occurred. It can sometimes be triggered by stress, genetic factors and hormonal or climate changes. If you have dandruff, don’t ignore it. You can try shampooing daily. Frequent shampooing will help reduce the number of flakes that show up, but it is important to know that it does nothing to eliminate the fungus. You may need to try an anti-dandruff shampoo. Find a dandruff shampoo that works for you What you want is a shampoo that leaves your hair dandruff-free and looking good. There are several different types of dandruff shampoos available. Tar-based shampoos work by slowing cell production. Salicylic acid-based shampoos slough off dead cells before they clump. Shampoos with pyrithione zinc and selenium sulfide reduce cell turnover. These shampoos usually should be used everyday. If you are not sure, read the side of the package, or check with your pharmacist
There are also anti-fungal products like NIZORAL* shampoo with ketoconazole, a clinically proven ingredient that kills the fungus that causes dandruff. This particular anti-fungal shampoo does not require daily use to prevent dandruff from returning. And it doesn’t leave behind an unpleasant medicinal smell.
If you want to eliminate your dandruff, the first step is to find the right anti-dandruff shampoo. Then, forget about bad hair days caused by dandruff and enjoy shiny, healthy, manageable hair. (Even the best shampoo, however, won’t do a thing for a bad haircut!)
